Management of the School
The principal is responsible for the day-to-day management of the school, including guidance and direction of the teachers and other staff of the school, and is accountable to the Board for that management. The Board manages the school on behalf of the Patron and is accountable to the Patron and the Minister.
The Patron is the person recognised as such by the Minister in accordance with Section 8 of the Education Act, 1998. It is the duty of the Patron, in accordance with Section 14 of the Education Act, 1998, to appoint, where practicable, a Board of Management. In Catholic and Church of Ireland schools, the bishops are the patrons of schools within the churches' diocese. The parish priest usually carries out the functions on behalf of the bishop.
The Board of Management is the body of persons appointed by the Patron to manage the school. The Board manages the school on behalf of the Patron and for the benefit of the students and their parents and to provide, or cause to be provided, an appropriate education for each student at the school for which that Board has responsibility. The Board is the employer of staff in the school. The board of management includes representatives of parents, teachers, trustees or patron, the principal and the community.
